STELLENBOSCH: Plenty of schools own a 3D printer that sits under a dust cover because the one teacher who knew how to use it has moved on. PrintAcademy 3D, which supplies 3D printing courses and classroom lab kits from Stellenbosch, has published its course programme for schools planning their 2027 timetables.
Courses for each person in the room
Teachers start with an introduction course on classroom workflows and lesson planning, then move to an intermediate course on design practice. Learners get a foundations course on design basics and safe equipment use, and a CAD basics course for building simple printable objects. A printer operations course covers loading, preparing and monitoring prints in a supervised space, and there are project planning and holiday programme courses as well.
Lessons, not just prints
“A printer is only useful if a Grade 8 teacher can run it in a 45-minute period with thirty learners,” said PrintAcademy 3D’s education programme lead. “So we train the staff before we hand over the kit, and we leave them with project plans for maths, science, geography and technology.”
PrintAcademy 3D works with schools in Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Gqeberha.
Courses and lab kits are at piocreat3d.africa. Filament and 3D printer spares are available through am.co.za.
