The fortress, which is also called ’Gaul House’ was first mentioned in 1286 in a document of the parish church in Bozen. Since the 14th Century, it was the property of the Lords of Boymundt-Payersberg. Lord Jacob changed the residence between 1560 and 1575 to what it looks like today. He called the annex after the swan in his coats of arms: Schwanburg. Besides black bull of the Boymundter family which they used for a long time, the Lords of Payersberg also had a proud white swan on a blue background in their coat of arms. Today, these animals are still part of the official coat of arms of the village of Nals.
The castle consists of a picturesque group of individual buildings with loggias and representative staircases, which surround a courtyard. At the entry gate, the coat of arms of the Boymundt-Payersberger can be seen, together with the year 1560. In the courtyard, you will find a beautiful sundial marked with the year 1563, as well as two walled Roman stones with ivy around them.

Già citato nel 1286 in un documento della Parrocchia di Bolzano come “Haus in der Gaul” (“casa nella stretta”) il castello appartiene dal XIV secolo al nobile casato dei Boymont-Payersberg. Negli anni 1560-1575 Jakob von Payersberg diede al castello l’odierno aspetto. Chiamò il castello con il nome "Schwan" (cigno) rappresentato nel suo stemma: Schwanburg. I signori von Payersberg nel loro stemma e scudi di famiglia riportavano oltre al toro nero della casata dei Boymont anche il fiero cigno bianco su sfondo blu. Il toro ed il cigno orano ancor’oggi lo stemma ufficiale del comune di Nalles.
Il castello si presenta come un insieme d’edifici singoli con logge e scale che si raccolgono intorno ad un cortile interno. All’ingresso del castello è posto lo stemma della casata dei Boymunth-Payersberg del 1560. Nel cortile si trova anche un bellissimo orologio solare che riporta la data 1563 e due tavole romane avvolte da rigoglioso fogliame.

Die Burg, die auch als „Haus in der Gaul“ bezeichnet wurde, wurde schon 1286 in einer Urkunde der Pfarre Bozen erwähnt und war seit dem 14. Jahrhundert im Besitze der Herren von Boymundt-Payersberg, von denen Jakob in den Jahren 1560-1575 dem Ansitz die heutige Gestalt gab. Er nannte den Neubau nach dem Schwan in seinem Wappen: Schwanburg. Die Herren von Payersberg führten nämlich neben dem angestammten schwarzen Stier der Boymundter einen stolzen weißen Schwan in blauem Feld in ihrem Schilde. Dieselben Wappentiere schmücken auch das offizielle Wappen der Gemeinde Nals heute.
Die Burg besteht aus einer malerischen Gruppe von Einzelbauten mit Loggiengängen und Freitreppen, die einen Binnenhof umschließen. Am Eingangstor ist das Wappen des Geschlechts der Boymundt-Payersberger mit der Jahrzahl 1560 angebracht. Im Hof befindet sich eine schöne Sonnenuhr mit der Jahreszahl 1563, und zwei eingemauerte Römersteine sind mit üppigem Laubwerk umrankt.
