The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) believes that the Tshwane Metro’s Department of Regional Operations and Coordination is already struggling to manage several cemeteries and will not be able to take on a crematorium as well.
The Freedom Front Plus on Thursday rejected a proposal to transfer the management of the Rebecca Street Crematorium, located in western Pretoria, to the Metro’s Department of Regional Operations and Coordination. This Crematorium is the only one of its kind in Pretoria and is, therefore, vitally important to the city’s residents.
The report containing the proposal was tabled to the Oversight Committee for Environmental and Agricultural Affairs.
The Department of Regional Operations and Coordination currently manages all cemeteries in Pretoria, most of which are in a terrible condition.
The Freedom Front Plus cannot endorse a proposal to place the Crematorium under the same Department that is clearly unable to properly manage the cemeteries. The party’s negative vote resulted in the report and proposal being rejected.
The Freedom Front Plus is satisfied that the Crematorium will remain under the oversight of the Department of Environmental and Agricultural Affairs. The party will keep opposing centralisation to ensure that the departments within the Metro take responsibility for their respective functions.
The rejection of this report points to a shift taking place in the run-up to the municipal elections on 4 November 2026.
And that is why it is crucial to increase the Freedom Front Plus’s influence on local government level – to put a stop to proposals that undermine service delivery and effective management.
