Tragic Incident in Lynnwood Road

16 July 2026 12:14 pm

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) submitted an urgent motion to the Tshwane Metro following the tragic death of Mr Hugo van der Berg, who fell into a hole in the sidewalk in front of the Javet Arts Centre in Lynnwood Road on Saturday evening after the Springbok match.

It appears that the construction site with the hole was not properly fenced off.

The motion proposes, among other things, that the Council should publicly express its condolences to the family, conduct an independent investigation, and hold the responsible engineer and contractor accountable.

The contractor should be blacklisted and excluded from future tenders, the victims or their next of kin should be compensated, and the City Manager should table a comprehensive audit report on all major construction projects to the Council.

Furthermore, the Mayoral Committee Member for Roads and Transport, Tlangi Mogale, should submit a report detailing administrative and oversight failures as well as disciplinary steps against negligent officials or contractors to the Council within seven days.

Open and unfenced excavations alongside or in roads constitute a serious breach of safety standards.

The Metro has a constitutional obligation to ensure its residents’ safety, and the Freedom Front Plus is determined to see this matter through and ensure that the relevant parties are held accountable.
