The 3 flag replicas were added to the old Dutch / VOC based flag as part of a drawn out compromise between the 3 major White groups. The Cape based Afrikaners: represented by the Orange White & Blue horizontal tri colour background though not explicitly / The British or English speakers: represented by the British Union Jack / & the Boers: represented by the Transvaal Republic flag & the Orange Free State flag. The Afrikaner Nationalists wanted a new flag without the Brit & Boer flags.
The Afrikaner Nationalists wanted to adopt a new South African national flag when it became a republic. The Republic of South Africa never got its own flag as it simply inherited & adopted the Union Flag. Prime Minister Verwoerd even approved of a new design for the Republic but it was not adopted because after he was assassinated: his successor was faced with more pressing problems & was reluctant to reopen the divisive flag issue as the flag was only adopted in 1927 after intense debates.
The video notes that the major Boer Republics flags were part of the flag of the Republic of South Africa from 1961 to 1994 BUT this flag was adopted in 1927 as the Union Flag. Therefore this flag was not issued in 1961 as the video suggests by omission. This is an important point because D F Malan wanted to adopt the Orange White & Blue horizontal tri Colour WITHOUT the 3 flag replicas in the center & the Afrikaner Nationalists wanted to adopt a new South African national flag.
