A mecca of sorts for some Afrikaaners, this place is distinctly creepy. Mixed in with the celebration of a heroic trek by Dutch settlers across a hostile terrain, is an unpleasant racist undertow, all tinged with the kind of fascist occultism that was in vogue during the period it was being built (late 30s to late 40s). Needless to say, it’s not exactly on the black tourist trail and the woman in the information centre completely blanked the black guy in our group. An undeniably curious place though, if anything more so for the dying ideological microclimate that clings on here — now as much a historical artefact as the bricks themselves.
