The Voortrekkers, or pioneers, were mainly Boer people who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1855 and trekked northwards to establish new homesteads. The monument was built in 1931 though the idea was first mooted in 1888 by Paul Kruger, President of the Transvaal Republic.
Daniel d’Ors has put a sketch of the Monument here.
