Shifra is probably the most aggressive out of the dogs, even moreso than Israel. She doesn’t hesitate to get into a fight and will not back off on her own. Sometimes it’s hard to defend a dog breed that I know so personally…because I can’t say that my pit bulls never fight (but the fight isn’t to the death, there’s always a reason behind it, and it’s always a very DOG or ANIMAL reason, not a supposed "pit bull" reason like having a taste for blood) and Israel can be extremely wary of other dogs and he’s not a big fan of adults that stare him down. Shifra likes people a lot and is very friendly with other dogs, but when she gets in a mood that she wants to pick a fight, there’s little you can say.
Judah is so different. She prefers to keep to herself. She doesn’t like picking fights. She’ll fight back no problem and will usually win. Israel has almost never tried crossing her, while she and Shifra had the worst fight any of my dogs have ever had.
It scares me when I see some people with a pit bull. Just this last Sunday an employee at the pet store showed off her new blue APBT puppy to me. She knows I have pits. Poor thing already had his ears chopped off. He wanted to play with Simona but was also unsure of what to do–so he snarled and growled and barked at her. She returned the favor, scaring him away.
He wasn’t being aggressive because he was a pit bull, he was being aggressive like any unsure puppy might react in that situation. Some run away, others try to act big and tough–and he was a little bit of both.
The owner picked him up when he was reacting negatively and said "Stop it!" and cuddled him.
I just stared for a few seconds in disbelief and I was bold enough to say, "I would never pick him up when he’s acting out like that. You’re only reinforcing to him that he did something good."
Then he tried to say that he was afraid his puppy would hurt Simona. I laughed. "She holds her own just fine with my big dogs…they were just being puppies. They need to figure out how to communicate with each other on their own."
All he could talk about was how he hoped the dog didn’t wind up vicious when it was older.
Well, if you already have it in your head that your puppy is going to be vicious because of it’s breed, DON’T GET THE BREED.
He clearly couldn’t handle any dog, let alone a pit bull.
I wanted to smack him upside his head. It’s the completely wrong attitude to have. The guy didn’t want the two puppies to play because he was completely embarrassed that his dog was being so nervous and vocal. Simona just sat down and stared at him as if saying, "You’re a punk, if you want some of this, come get it!!!" and wouldn’t back off because she knows she can take a puppy that’s her size.
It’s just immensely frustrating to know that so many people have the breed but can’t handle it…let alone any dog. Sigh. It’s a losing battle.
