Just been reading John Rees’s book "The Levellers and the English Revolution" so thought I’d posted a few photos taken around Putney parish church, famous for the Putney Debates of 1647 where Colonel Thomas Rainsborough famously declared that… "I think that the poorest he that is in England hath a life to live as the greatest he; and therefore truly. Sir, I think it’s clear that every man that is to live under a Government ought first by his own consent to put himself under that Government…" Pretty revolutionary stuff for the times; he was murdered the following year.
The church tower is 15th century, but the bulk of the church is made up of Edward Lapidge’s restoration of 1836.
