The Boer War Memorial, sculpted by George William Hill, sits at the northern edge of Square Dorchester. The only equestrian statue in Montreal–atypically restrained instead of mounted, it is dedicated to the Montréalers who fought alongside the British during the Boer War. The Boer War, fought between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics, the Orange Free State and the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic), founded by settlers known as Voortrekkers who made the Great Trek from the Cape Colony, was widely unpopular in Quebec, viewed as an imperial war. Around the base of the statue, copper reliefs and the names of each battle.
Square Dorchester, part of Dominion Square until 1967, was developed along with the adjacent Place Du Canada between 1872 and 1892. After the death of René Lévesque in 1987, Dorchester Boulevard was re-named in his honour and the park was re-named after Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester. The four principal monuments–the others being the Robert Burns Memorial, Sir Wilfrid Laurier Memorial, and Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Fountain–in the square are arranged to form an equilateral cross with the kiosk towards the Dominion Square Building.
