ies which halbeen circulated among the Boers as to the in-tentions of the British, promising that privateproperty would be respected, non-combatantswould be safe, and burghers other than thosewho had taken an active part in the war or indirecting the operations would be allowed toreturn to their farms on surrendering their horsesand taking an oath not to tight again during thewar. Reports from Pretoria pointed to com-plete disorganisation having set in at the Boercapital. The enem3s forces north of Johannes-burg were everywhere retiring without attempt-ing to make a stand against the cavalry underFrench and the mounted infantry under Huttonwho had been sent in pursuit of them. LordRoberts determined to press on at once toPretoria without giving the enemy time to rally, and the information collected by the IntelligenceDepartment all pointed to no prolonged effortbeing made to defend the capital, from which itwas said that President Kruger and the BoerE.xecutive had already taken flight.

HETHULIE BRIDCE, AFTER ITS DESTRUCTION. 350 CHAPTER XXXIX. THK OCCUlATION OF IKETORIA. PKETORIA, though older than Johannes-burg, had not yet half a century ofliislury when the British army underLord Roberts marched upon it. Theplace was founded in 1855, the ground uponwhich the first houses were built being theproperty of Martin Wessel Pretorius, one of theleaders of the Boers in the great trek. Thenew village was named after him. It was stillonly a large village when, five years later, in i860,the seat of government of the South AfricanRepublic was removed to it from Potchef-stroom. It stands in a hollow between the ranges ofhills that run east and west in parallel ridgeslike great natural ramparts. The low ground iswell watered and fertile. As the village grewinto a town the houses were not crowdedtogether, but for the most part built with amplegarden space around them. The main thorough-fares are shaded with rows of trees, and streamsof clear water run down beside the footways.Vie
