Four buildings have been preserved and restored as museums to the life of Paul Kruger and the earliest farmers in the Transvaal. The oldest building is a cottage built in 1841 by the first owner of Boekenhoutfontein, a single-storey building with a thatched roof and stone patio out front. When Paul Kruger moved here in 1863, he built a new thatched homestead for his family, known as the ‘Pioneer House’. To its right stands the main homestead, a double-storey stone house built in 1872 in typical Eastern- Cape style. It contains many of Kruger’s possessions along with an assortment of period furniture from other homes. The fourth house, built for Kruger’s son Pieter, dates from 1892.
