Glory days, wish I could have been there to see it, seeing the alignment
again brings back memories – nearly 5 years hard work for Bombela
Contractors to get to this stage. But worth it – a super railway for SA and
hopefully the beginning of a much bigger rail experience….

Funny how whites in South Africa are enjoying the first world
infrastructure ride yet they’ll never associate it with the ruling ANC!!!
They only associate corruption, mismanagement with the ruling party they
will never acknowledge the good things it is doing to SA. just sayin

Actually for all I know, the train is majority black middle class every day
now, I dont actually ride the train every day. That said, SA is truthfully
problematic in this regard, where we have the old scenario of the rich
getting richer and the poor getting poorer. People thought that because
Apartheid was over that everything would become magical, but the government
is in its infancy, with lots to learn. People starving on one end, ruling
party spending 100 Million on parties. Far to go …

I think you make a very good point and a lot of white people do nothing but
bitch and moan and complain all day long, and the loooove to blame every
little problem in their life on the ANC. That said though, is there any
reason for them to believe that it was only thanks to the ANC that
something like the Gautrain exists? Would it not have been possible if a
different ruling party had been voted in?

Not that I agree with him (definitely not) but he did bring up something
interesting that I noticed. This being South Africa, why are most
passengers white? With South Africa being a black majority country and all,
one would expect to see a considerable amount of black people riding this
fabulous sexy new transport. Is there segregation still going on down there?

They drive rather than take the train as many do in the UK for the same
reason as some do in the UK; Snobbery. There is no colour bar to neither
snobbery nor racism in my personal experience.

Its not actually segregation, well not racial anyways. The Gautrain is &
pretty much has always been designed as alternate transport for the middle
class. The issue is that people who think that everything is racial in SA
come to me and say “oh this is so BS, why are there only white people in
the video, where are all the black people this is so terrible”. The real
truth of the matter is that there are tons of black people who drive to
work everyday in BMWS and Mercs, its not racial, just class.

I think you are right about the inequality between people. Instead of being
racial, it’s by income. South Africa still has a high GINI coefficient, one
thing I would have hoped the SA Government would have reduced. Mind you the
ANC had to kow tow to the Unholy Trinity of the IMF, the World Bank and the
WTO. Those three make loan sharks, drug dealers and Tribal Warlords look
like nice altruistic people in economic terms!
