The fuel crisis in South Africa has already reached the point where it is preventing the Community Safety Oversight Committee of the Tshwane Metro from functioning properly.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) anticipates that this will become a nationwide problem, requiring thorough planning and the sensible use of available fuel.
In Tshwane, a scheduled visit to the Metro’s horse stables and dog units on Tuesday was cancelled at the last minute due to a shortage of diesel.
Committee members are usually transported to the various sites by bus.
This inspection is important to oversee the welfare of the animals, the condition of the facilities and the operational readiness of the dog units, which play a key role in law enforcement in the community and the Metro’s overall safety.
It is alarming that this important function cannot be performed.
The shortage of diesel points to serious shortcomings in planning and management. It is unacceptable that the Metro failed to provide for basic operational requirements, such as fuel for official transport.
This failure not only affects internal functioning, but could also have a direct detrimental impact on service delivery and public safety.
The Freedom Front Plus wrote to the Mayoral Committee Member for Roads and Transport, Tlangi Mogale, requesting an urgent investigation to determine the cause of the diesel shortage and identify the officials responsible so they can be held accountable.
The Freedom Front Plus remains committed to the principles of sound governance, accountability and effective oversight, and will keep pressing for this issue to be addressed.
