Memorable Musical Moments – Proudly South African – This one straddles the
South African – and International categories and is presented with more
than a bit of pride. In 2012, a major bucket list item fell into place when
a number of super talented artists assembled in South Africa for the
recording of our collaboration project, Synkropation. One of the
international artists to visit was Dino Jelusic, the first ever winner of
the Junior Eurovision Song contest. The young man had developed into an
accomplished singer with a powerful voice and a range most people can only
dream of.
South African producer Mel Botes heard some of Dino’s material, and
immediately asked to include him in a performance of his great musical,
David’s Confession. The problem was that the performance was due for the
very day on which Dino would arrive in South Africa after an overnight
flight. There would be precious little time for rehearsal, and the song, a
long one, is complicated beyond description. It features a classical piano
intro, and runs in conjunction with a background video and a narrator.
Timing is crucial, and for anyone to take this one with no rehearsal is
akin to madness.
Dino did not shy away from the challenge, and when he took his place
behind the keys, it was as if he had been performing this for a season
already. He had illustrious company on stage though, with the great musical
talents of Mel Botes, Ghapi Musician, Simon Orange, Nathan Smith and others
backing him up. This video still brings chills as we recall that proud
moment. “Make Believe” performed by a visiting artist as if it were his
own. Note how Mel Botes turns around to the band in delight at 4:48 when
Dino hits a sublime note. Dino Jelusic – Make Believe live in Pretoria, SA?
Memorable Musical Moments special edition- Today it is exactly a year ago
that I anxiously waited at the airport and finally met Dino Jelusic and
Dario Jelusi? to mark the start of our international collaboration
recording project, Synkropation.
The weary travellers had spent nearly 24 hours travelling, but there was no
respite. After a quick freshen-up, it was straight into a video interview,
and then they were off to the Atterbury Teater/Theatre. South African
musical maestro Mel Botes had invited Dino to take a role in his wonderful
musical, David’s Confession.
The musical is extremely complicated and involved, being backed by a
pre-recorded narrator and a video backdrop. Timing is crucial. Dino had
been lumbered with a difficult piece, starting with Beethoven’s 5th on
piano and a challenging vocal part on top of it. Despite only being
afforded a single (half) rehearsal on the day of the performance after an
overnight flight, he nailed his performance with supreme authority. The
mark of a superstar indeed, and undoubtedly it will stand forever as one of
my favourite musical memories of all times. Dino Jelusic joins the cast of
David’s Confession for “make Believe”.
