Magalies Water and the City of Tshwane (CoT) continue to work closely together to manage and respond to water supply challenges currently affecting customers supplied through the Wallmannsthal Supply System. The Wallmannsthal Reservoir, which supplies the Derdepark, Hoewes and Baviaanspoort Reservoir systems, has experienced declining storage levels over the past week due to [VA1.1] insufficient and inconsistent augmentation from the Roodeplaat Water Treatment Plant
This is due to high demand and system constraints on the CoT Main System upstream, which is independent of the Magalies Water Wallmannsthal WTW Supply3 system.
The city and Magalies Water technical teams are continuously monitoring the system and implementing interventions aimed at stabilising reservoir levels and maintaining equitable distribution across all affected areas. Higher-lying communities are currently experiencing the greatest impact, including reduced water pressure and intermittent supply interruptions. While various demand management measures have been implemented, including nightly reservoir management interventions, water consumption across the system remains significantly higher than the available replenishment capacity.
Residents are therefore requested to continue using water responsibly and only for essential domestic purposes. To improve reservoir recovery and preserve water availability during peak consumption periods, temporary reservoir outlet closures co 2 will be implemented daily between 20:00 and 08:00.
These measures are necessary to restore stability to the system and ensure that available water resources are distributed as fairly as possible across all affected communities. The City of Tshwane is simultaneously implementing operational measures to optimise production and distribution from its available sources, while working together with Magalies Water to maximise augmentation and restore supply to the Wallmannsthal supply system.
Both institutions remain committed to identifying and implementing additional interventions to improve water availability and system resilience. Where prolonged interruptions are experienced, water tankers are being coordinated and deployed to provide temporary relief to affected residents, with priority being given to the most severely impacted communities. The inconvenience caused to residents is acknowledged, and we assure communities that every effort is being made to restore and maintain a sustainable water supply within the affected areas. It is further highlighted that this joint communication is issued as a collaborative effort towards alignment following the statement issued on the 30th of October 2026 by CoT, to provide remedial updates to our consumers and the public. Further updates will be communicated as additional information becomes available.
