FOURWAYS, Gauteng – Metalcross Vehicle Makeover Clinic has released an advisory guide examining the realistic progression and cost implications of leaving a car scratch unrepaired, aiming to provide South African motorists with an evidence-based framework rather than generalised urgency.
Distinguishing Cosmetic Damage from Genuine Risk
The guide draws a clear distinction between scratches that remain purely cosmetic and those that carry a genuine risk of escalating cost over time. Key assessment factors include whether the clear coat has been breached, the duration the damage has been present, and the scratch’s location on the vehicle, given that panel exposure to moisture and sunlight directly affects deterioration.
A Four Stage Deterioration Model
The publication details four progressive stages of scratch damage. During the initial months, damage confined to the clear coat poses minimal risk, as the base coat and metal remain protected. Between three and six months, exposure of the base coat introduces mild vulnerability to fading and moisture ingress at the scratch edges, though repair costs remain largely unchanged. From six months onward, exposure of primer or bare metal creates a viable pathway for moisture, with visible surface rust potentially developing between six months and just over a year, depending on rain exposure and vehicle care. Beyond one year, established rust requires a materially different repair process, incorporating rust removal and metal treatment prior to repainting.
Quantifying the Cost Difference
According to the guide, the cost of repairing a clear coat only scratch remains largely static regardless of whether it is addressed within the first month or several months later. Once base coat exposure persists beyond six months, minor additional preparation costs may apply. Once rust has developed, the guide indicates that repair costs increase by a proportional, generally modest amount, rather than a dramatic multiple of the original estimate. An exception applies to scratches located near wheel arches or panel edges, where standing moisture accelerates deterioration at each stage.
Practical Assessment Guidance
The publication provides motorists with simple diagnostic guidance, including a fingernail test to determine whether damage has progressed past the clear coat, and visual indicators such as edge discolouration, which typically signals early oxidation, or orange and brown staining within the scratch line, which indicates early but manageable surface rust.
