Statement by Cllr Dikeledi Selowa – DA Tshwane Spokesperson on Roads and Transport:
The DA notes the statement made by Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya, denying a claim apparently put to her that a municipal contractor undertook renovations at her house.
It is significant that the Mayor felt it necessary to issue a statement on the issue to preempt a Sunday news report. Her story is that she paid for the renovations herself, and that the work was not done by a municipal contractor.
This is not the first time that Moya has faced allegations about her personal integrity. Last year, Moya was forced to repay funds she had been overpaid when she was a City official.
We also discovered that while Moya was leading City disconnection teams, she had failed to pay municipal rates and charges on her own home for more than a year.
In both instances, Moya was indignant about the supposed violation of her privacy in a transparent attempt to escape accountability.
Neither is Moya the only member of her government who has come under scrutiny. Her MMC for Finance, Eugene Modise, has been found guilty of benefitting unlawfully from a contract with the municipality. Moya has kept him in his position.
In the past weeks, we had to go to court to stop the suspension of Johann Mettler as City Manager, a process initiated by Moya at the demand of the EFF.
For the sake of transparency, we encourage Moya to provide invoices and proof of payment for the renovations. If indeed there is nothing to the story, then producing these documents should not be a problem for her.
