Explosion at Waltloo Substation

30 September 2026 7:51 am

The City of Tshwane is aware of a power interruption affecting the 132 kV Njala Infeed Substation supply grid on the morning of 29 September 2026. The interruption followed an explosion at Waltloo Substation, which caused Njala Infeed Substation to trip. Supply to several primary substations has consequently been disrupted.

The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department is at Waltloo Substation attending to the fire caused by the explosion. The area must be made safe before technicians can fully assess the damaged equipment and begin repairs. Customers are urged to stay clear of the substation and allow emergency personnel to carry out their work.

An electricity technical team has been dispatched to investigate the extent of the damage and determine the repairs required to restore supply. The City will provide an estimated restoration time once the assessment is complete. The precise areas affected are also being confirmed.

Customers supplied by the following substations and facility are currently affected:

  • Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)
  • Heatherley
  • Highlands
  • Koedoespoort
  • Lynnwood
  • Mamelodi 1, 2 and 3
  • Mooikloof
  • Pumulani
  • Pyramid
  • Scientia
  • Villieria
  • Wapadrand
  • Waltloo
  • Willows
  • Wingate

Customers should treat all electrical network infrastructure as live and keep appliances unplugged until power has been safely restored.

The City apologises for the inconvenience and will provide further updates as information becomes available.
