Bassani Auction House Breaks Records With Historic Sales

Cape Town, 4 October 2024: Bassani Auction House has made history once again with its recent Signature Auction on September 29th, shattering records with the sale of two rare and highly sought-after items.

The highlight of the auction was a 1902 South Africa Veld Pond (MS65), a coin steeped in South African history with only 5 coins in a higher grade. This exceptionally rare piece was graded by NGC. It exceeded expectations and sold for R621 600. The Veld Pond is one of only 986 ever minted by Boer fighters during the final days of the Second Boer War. Asserting their independence from British forces, the soldiers handcrafted the coins using melted-down gold bars and nuggets, shaping them with makeshift tools and old farm machinery. This sale marks one of the highest prices ever achieved for a Veld Pond in South Africa. What makes it even more significant is that the MS65 Veld Pond sold for R56,000 more than it did just two months ago at Heritage Auctions, the world’s largest numismatic auction house. This achievement highlights the rapid growth and strength of the South African market, with local demand outpacing even international competitors.

The 1933 100 Pound Note is the most expensive banknote ever sold in South Africa, fetching R286,800 at the auction and setting a new record. This note, with only one known in a higher grade, holds significant historical value. Originally part of the personal collection of J. Postmus, Governor of the Reserve Bank of South Africa in 1933, the note was offered by his grandson, who also provided a signed letter of provenance for the winning bidder.
